New-Old-Stock (NOS) Shimano 105 Double Crankarm Set (Model FC-5501...170 mm)...Silver Finish
Thank you for your interest in this item and please visit our store for other offerings. We have very reasonable shipping terms and combine orders to save money (for customers) on shipping costs. We also maintain customer friendly return/refund/exchange policies. Product Description:

This offering is for a set of new-old-stock Shimano 105 crankarms (Model FC-5501) for a double chainring set and in a silver finish. These crankarm sets incorporate Shimano's first generation Hollowtech design (so they are made from a hardened/forged alloy with a hollow center section for added strength/durability and a lighter weight relative to predecessor models). It's also worth noting this crankarm set is the last Shimano 105 production model to incorporate the Octalink bottom bracket interface (and we discuss bottom bracket specs in more detail below). The date range for this particular crankarm set is from 2000 to 2002. This was followed by a modest refresh from 2003 to 2005. It was not until 2006 that Shimano rolled out their Hollowtech II design (with the bottom bracket cartridge bearings seated outside the frame's bottom bracket shell).

This crankarm set was marketed as a 9-speed drivetrain component, but it should function in other drivetrain environments (although if it's intended for significantly older drivetrains, then spacers may be needed to widen the gap between the chainrings to accommodate a wider chain). This is not a difficult task, but will require some patience until proper width is achieved. If I had to make a recommendation, then I would suggest backwards compatibility should be limited to 7/8 speed drivetrains...where chains were already beginning to narrow...so any spacing adjustments should not be very significant (and in some cases, may not be necessary).

The crankarm set measures 170 mm in length, weighs 494 grams with the crankbolts (per our digital postal scale) and has a bolt-circle diameter ("BCD") of 130 mm. Other specifications indicate the crankarm set is designed to accept an Octalink (V1) oversized bottom bracket with the large (22 mm in diameter) hollow pipe billet axle. The key in this regard is to make sure the crankarm set is matched with the correct bottom bracket to ensure proper chainline (and Shimano specs. proper chainline on a double crankset to be 43.5 mm). To achieve this desired chainline, our Shimano catalogs indicate a 68 mm x 109.5 mm bottom bracket is recommended for an English threaded frame (and a 70 mm x 109.5 mm for an Italian threaded frame).

With respect to condition, these crankarm sets are in new and unused condition. The polished silver finish still shows fairly well, but I am seeing shopwear (scratches and scuffs) due to bulk packing in plastic bags. Lastly (and as noted in the pictures), we will provide a factory matched set of chainring bolts, crankbolts and washers with each offering. Listing Update...I have just one set of these crankarm sets left in stock in the 170 mm size and I have updated the pictures to reflect this last set. To this end, I can confirm the shopwear visible in the close-up pictures is fairly representative of what I am seeing in person...in terms of the scuffs and scratches in the silver finish.

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.

Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
